On December 25th, Christians worldwide observe “Christmas,” commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. It’s a day filled with joyous greetings of ‘Merry Christmas,’ adorned with well-chosen attire, delicious feasts, and the exchange of heartfelt gifts among loved ones. The air resonates with a spirit of celebration and cheer.

Adorning their homes, Christians embellish a ‘Christmas Tree’—an artificial evergreen bedecked with twinkling electric bulbs and radiant paper stars. Children gather to sing carols and melodious hymns that honor the birth of Christ.

Anticipation heightens as they eagerly await the arrival of ‘Father Christmas’ or ‘Santa Claus,’ a figure dressed in vibrant red and white, donning a long, snowy beard. He bears a sack filled with enchanting gifts like toys, sweets, and delightful treats for the children.

Meanwhile, churches and public spaces shimmer and shine with the resplendent aura of festive decorations. It’s a time of joy and splendor, where the ambiance sparkles with the spirit of Christmas. And as the day draws to a close, wishes for a ‘Happy New Year’ echo through the air, embracing the promise of new beginnings.

Let’s delve into the profound shadow cast by the cross, a place where the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus form the bedrock of Christianity. Over time, the Christian community has pondered deeply upon the significance of these events in our existence. What lay at the core of Jesus’ life? Or more simply put, why Jesus?

In the realm of everyday faith, the prevailing response often emphasizes redemption. This perspective harks back to the Genesis tale, recognizing in the disobedience of Adam and Eve a fundamental disconnection from God—a chasm so deep that divine intervention became imperative to bridge it. The Incarnation, the embodiment of the divine in human form, is seen as God’s remedy for this primal rupture. Redemption, therefore, is construed as a process of “buying back.”

How did this belief evolve? Similar to our attempts to grapple with tragedies, particularly innocent suffering, the earliest disciples of Jesus sought to fathom the depths of his agonizing demise. They probed: Why did this happen? They turned to their Jewish traditions such as Temple rituals and their sacred texts for insight.

Certain rites and passages (like the suffering servant in Isaiah, lamenting psalms, and wisdom literature addressing the suffering of the righteous) appeared to resonate with the harrowing events marking the culmination of Jesus’ life. Consequently, these potent images permeated the entire narrative, shaping the essence of Jesus’ birth and existence.

Over centuries, interpretations of Jesus’ crucifixion have evolved within Christian theology and devotion. At times, there have been depictions of God as requiring Jesus’ suffering and death to reconcile and placate an angered deity. In various theological frameworks, prevalent devotions, and religious customs, the purpose of Jesus’ life becomes intricately entwined with the concept of original sin and the universal human inclination toward wrongdoing. Absent sin, the Incarnation might have been unnecessary.

Christmas, a commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ, is observed diversely among people, all rooted in this significant event. The date fixed for Christmas is December 25th, traditionally regarded as the day of Jesus’s birth, although the precise date remains unknown. As early as 137 AD, the Bishop of Rome initiated the celebration of the Christ child’s birthday as a solemn feast. Later, in 350 AD, Bishop Julius I designated December 25th as the day for observing Christmas, known as The Mass of Christ.

The variations in Christmas celebrations are abundant. In my family, our traditions include adorning our home with festive decorations, engaging in gift exchanges, attending church services, and preparing a grand feast. Amidst these rituals, we hold onto the essence of Christmas – honoring the birth of Jesus Christ.

In essence, while diverse customs color Christmas celebrations worldwide, my journey has taught me the value of commemorating Christmas within the embrace of my family and congregation.
